This guide is for owners, managing partners and marketing leads at personal injury firms. Each step links to a longer guide.
What does growth mean for a personal injury firm?
For most PI firms, growth means more signed cases of the types you want, at a cost per case you can sustain. More calls or more clicks don't count on their own.
Track three numbers every month: signed cases by case type, signed cases by source, and what each source cost you. Everything in this guide is built around those numbers.
What are the steps to grow a personal injury law firm?
- Decide which cases you want. Pick case types (car, truck, motorcycle, workers' comp) and the states where you're licensed. See how to get more personal injury cases.
- Build more than one source of cases. Combine referrals, your website and search presence, ads and paid lead sources. See personal injury law firm marketing.
- Choose who runs your marketing. Compare a marketing agency and pay per lead on what you pay for, who owns what and what goes in writing.
- Fix intake before you add volume. Answer inquiries within minutes and follow up on a set schedule. See speed-to-lead intake scripts.
- Add channels by case type. Car accident and workers' comp cases come from different places. See how to get car accident cases and how to get more workers' comp cases.
- Measure cost per signed case by source. Divide what you spent on a source by the cases you signed from it, and shift budget toward the sources that sign.
- Scale what works. Document intake, hire ahead of demand and add one source at a time. See how to scale a personal injury practice.
- Know every acquisition channel and its rules. See personal injury case acquisition.
How big is the market for injury cases?
Large, and spread across every state. IIHS Fatality Facts 2024, based on federal FARS data, counts 39,254 motor vehicle crash deaths in the US in 2024. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that private industry employers recorded 2.5 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2024.
Those are national totals. State rules on fault, deadlines and workers' comp differ a lot, so check our car accident leads by state and workers' comp leads by state guides.
Which growth channels can a PI firm use?
| Channel | How cases arrive | Who does the work | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Referrals from other lawyers | Referral or co-counsel on a case | You and the referring lawyer | Fee division terms under Rule 1.5(e) |
| Website, content and local search | People find your firm online | Your team or an agency | Takes steady effort before it pays back |
| Paid search and social ads | Ads send inquiries to your intake | Your team or an agency, plus ad spend | Cost per signed case, not cost per click |
| TV, radio and outdoor | Brand recall, then a call or search | Agency or media buyer | Hard to track by source without call tracking |
| Pay-per-lead vendors | Claimant inquiries delivered to you | The vendor runs the campaigns | Exclusivity, consent records, replacement terms |
| Past clients and community | Word of mouth and repeat clients | Your firm | Needs a system for staying in touch |
Which ethics rules apply when a PI firm grows?
Under ABA Model Rule 7.2(b)(1), a lawyer may pay the reasonable costs of permitted advertising. Comment 5 to Rule 7.2 says a lawyer may pay others for generating client leads, as long as the lead generator doesn't recommend the lawyer and its communications are consistent with Rule 7.1.
Model Rule 7.3 restricts soliciting new clients by live person-to-person contact when pecuniary gain is a significant motive. Model Rule 1.5(c) requires a contingent fee agreement to be in a writing signed by the client.
This guide is general information for law firms, not legal advice. Your state's version of the ethics rules and your own counsel have the final say.
What should you measure every month?
- Inquiries by source and case type
- Contact rate: the share of inquiries your team reaches
- Signed cases by source
- Cost per signed case by source (spend on the source divided by cases signed from it)
- Time from inquiry to first call
Where exclusive cases fit
Exclusive leads are one source of new cases, not a whole growth plan. They pay off most once your intake can answer fast and you know which cases you want.
Exclusive MVA cases
Augment Leads runs its own car accident campaigns nationwide. The injured person fills in the form, and each MVA lead goes to one firm only, with an SMS-verified phone and a TrustedForm certificate, delivered to your CRM or intake team in real time. You choose the states and accident types you take. Spanish-speaking MVA leads are part of our regular product.
Exclusive workers' comp cases
Each workers' comp lead comes from a person hurt on the job who filled in the form themselves. It's screened for whether they were injured while working, whether they reported it and whether they already have a lawyer, then sent to one firm only. Unqualified leads are replaced under your agreement.
Augment Leads is a Canada-based company, founded in 2025, that serves US law firms nationwide and is trusted by over 50 law firms. You pay per lead, with no agency retainer and no minimum term. See how it works or read the FAQ.
Frequently asked questions
What is the first step to grow a personal injury law firm?
Decide which cases you want and in which states. Case type and state decide where you market, how intake screens callers and which sources make sense, so set them before you spend on volume.
How long does it take to grow a PI firm?
It depends on the channel. Referrals and search presence build slowly, while ads and pay-per-lead sources can send inquiries soon after setup. Track signed cases by source every month to see what is working.
Can a law firm pay for leads?
Comment 5 to ABA Model Rule 7.2 says a lawyer may pay others for generating client leads, as long as the lead generator doesn't recommend the lawyer and its communications are consistent with Rule 7.1. Check your state's version of the rule.
What should a PI firm measure to grow?
Inquiries, contact rate, signed cases and cost per signed case, each broken down by source and case type. Cost per signed case is what you spent on a source divided by the cases you signed from it.
Should a growing PI firm hire more intake staff first?
Usually, yes. Adding volume before intake can answer every inquiry fast wastes the new cases. Fix speed to lead and follow-up first, then add sources.
